Lifespan

The summer days burn more each day,
steam rises from doused pavement,
sudden storms flair and fade,
evening exhales a calm breeze.

Steam rises from doused pavement
heat shimmers and swirls
passion rises with the mercury.

Sudden storms flair and fade,
emotions flash and roar
then memories on the horizon.

Evening exhales a calm breeze,
comfort in the twilight,
clear skies and peace

Things We Can Hold

How
we seek
that which we
can grasp, control,
when things of import
more often resemble
the feeling the first time you
held a baby — fragile, unsure —
or attempts to embrace wisps of smoke,
or reaching for a hand no longer there.

Neighborhood Night, on a Slant

The dog is proud of the stick
she found in the yard,
convinced my shared admiration
is the only reason I would
choose to sit on the porch.

There is some dishonesty in efforts
to depict a night as silent.

The neighbor’s dog announces
the presence of each passing car,
crickets and frogs vie for dominance
of the stream bed, my dog bites
and chews on her newfound toy,

only the silhouettes of the trees are
content to remain quiet.

The Shore

Life’s lasting impression,
one final

dawn.

The tide comes with the heat,
waves erase

tracks.

Tears mingle with the sea,
wind scatters

ash.
