Today

Today,
names of victims are read …
for hours.
Today,
wreaths are placed
and taps is played.
Today,
the fallen are remembered,
tears are shed.
Today,
speeches are made
and the flag is waved.

Tomorrow,
we will forget again
and pretend the world
has not changed.
Tomorrow,
heroes will fall
for the names
that were read.
Tomorrow,
we will pass
by the flag
without a respectful pause.
Tomorrow,
politicians will make
excuses for those
who hate us still.

Today,
names are read,
wreaths are placed,
taps is played.
Tomorrow,
we will forget,
heroes will fall,
and they will hate us still.

never-forget

  1. Well said Mark. This is an anniversary of a very vivid time in my life and the history of our country. I was child when America was the hero of the free world; now it is in tatters, the planet is small and we are still a people of tribes.

Some of what I write is true, some is fiction; most is merely possibility.
